In the last five years I have travelled twice to London. Both those times I saw two plays at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
I have read or seen Macbeth over a dozen times in my life.
I say this because it is no secret that I am in love and obsessed with William Shakespeare. This article is not so much a touch on my love of the writer as much as this is a formal declaration.
I am becoming Shakespearean.
A Shakespearean is one who is knowledgeable and an expert on all things Bard. I have loved his works all my life and as of late my thirst for learning about his works has been unquenchable. That is why with equal parts filled with confidence and trepidation that I can say that one of my goals is to become Shakespearean; an expert at Shakespeare.
What makes and qualifies a Shakespearean? Nothing, really. There is no certificate or school where one goes to. Since I am enamored with his works you may very well call me one now. I just know that I am excited and want to know as much about the man and his works as possible.
My goal is to be able to talk Shakespeare with the most studied and knowledgeable people in the world on the subject and feel as if I am talking in passing about that day’s weather.
This is like announcing that you’re getting married. To me, at least. I am excited that I am going to spend the rest of my life learning and absorbing this man. If I were to live another five hundred years, it wouldn’t be enough time to enjoy Shakespeare, so I will do as much as I can in our shared limited time on earth.
I wish I could say that all that’s left to do is to get to work, but that would be a lie. Shakespeare is fun. Let’s get to enjoying life!
